Cancer causes 1 in 6 deaths globally and working towards a cure for this deadly disease is seen as a priority for many scientific disciplines. People who have been affected by cancer have their lives changed, and in this presentation, I will discuss the changes that I went through after seeing my father when he was diagnosed with stage III pancreatic cancer, suffered through chemotherapy treatments and eventually passing away to this disease. The events of my traumatic journey has encouraged me to engage with science and help support the fight against cancer. This has led me to work with Agilent Technologies on the development of new chromatographic support materials; which are used in the workflow for biopharmaceuticals, in particular antibody based therapies. This class of protein based drug, has seen substantial improvements to the detection and potential cure specific cancers; however, the workflows that are employed to ensure product quality and efficacy are substantially more involved than with more traditional small molecule preparations. This presentation will look at one aspect of the workflow to ensure the quality and efficacy of these new types of drugs, specifically looking at the development of new size exclusion columns; which has low levels of inertness allowing for better determination of mAb aggregates.
